Original Art for Sale
Original art for sale provides an overview of the works created by M.C. Escher that we currently have available.
Original Art
His earlier work mainly consists of landscapes, portraits, and a few still lifes. Later, his work evolves more towards the ‘Escherian’: regular divisions of the plane, playing with perspective, making the viewer struggle with three dimensions on a flat surface, cycles, metamorphoses, approaches to infinity, etc. In short, Escher manages to amaze the viewer, making us think. Not so much in search of something beautiful, but rather something astonishing. His works are each little gems, carefully recorded chronologically. This list can be found in the reference work by Bool, Kist, Locher, and Wierda: ‘Life and Work of M.C. Escher’. Often, reference is made to this reference work with the letter ‘B’ from Bool.
He made relatively few works: each piece required meticulous preparation, which of course takes time. And unlike other artists (such as Dali, Picasso, Miro, etc.), the lithographs and woodcuts are not copies of an original work but each work is an authentic print from a stone or woodblock. At his request, these blocks were destroyed when he died, which means that there are no posthumous works. And therefore all available works are indeed original works.
For Sale
The pieces listed below are often hand-signed (in pencil). Some lithographs are numbered, and for some works, ‘eigen druk’ is annotated. This means that he executed the printing himself. The woodcuts were made according to demand, which means they are not numbered.
The majority of these works are in excellent condition. Detailed photos can be provided upon request. Each work we offer has its own unique story.
There are wonderful websites and galleries online. Unfortunately, there are also obscure auction houses and auction sites where supposedly cheaper works by Escher are up for auction or for sale. Always check if the signature is authentic, if it is in the correct place, and if the dimensions of the work are correct. And trust the experience of true connaisseurs. (See: Forgeries)
Renowned
auction houses such as Sotheby’s, Christies, Heritage, etc. also occasionally offer beautiful works by M.C. Escher. Keep in mind that you pay on average 40% (up to 50%) more than the offered price before the work actually hangs in your living room. This is due to, among other things, buyer’s premium, packaging, shipping, insurance and customs costs. Transparency, quality and a personal touch are the cornerstones of Escherart.
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions, or if you want to inquire about the price.
